Soraya M. And Neda S.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

On July 23, 2009, U.S.A. Today published an op-ed entitled “Voices of Iranian Women” suggesting tha Neda Agah Soltan had become through her death, Iran’s Joan of Arc. The horrific video of Neda’s death was seen worldwide and it gave poignant gravity to the post election riots in Tehran. Neda is a martyr for Iranian freedom. She put a human face to the abstract politics and wall to wall media coverage of the near disintegration of Ayatollah Ali Khomeni’s regime.

Over the weekend of June 26, 2009, the motion picture, The Stoning of Soraya M., was given limited theatrical release before its nationwide opening on the weekend of July 10th. The film had been the second place runner-up at the Toronto International Film Festival, being beat out by Slumdog Millionaire. It adapts French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Shaebjam’s 1994 bestseller of the same title.

Without any way diminishing the heinous death of Neda Soltan, it is much more apropos to suggest that Soraya M. is Iran’s Joan of Arc. The parallels connecting Soraya and Joan of Arc are numerous and chilling.

Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl born in Domremy, in Champagne, France in 1412. At age 17 she heard voices commanding her to take up arms and lead the French Army against the English invaders who occupied Orleans. Her ultimate goal, which she succeeded in achieving was to place the Dauphin on his rightful throne enabling him to be crowned as Charles VII. Shortly thereafter, she was captured by the Burgundians, handed over to the English, tried before an eccleissiastical court and condemned to death as a relapsed heretic for the “crime” of wearing men’s clothing. Joan was burnt alive at the stake in Rouen in 1431. She was 19 years old.

Like Joan, Soraya faced trumped up, spurious charges. Her husband, Ali wanted a divorce so he could marry a 14 year old girl and get rid of his responsibility to Soraya and their children. Ali conspired with the village Mullah and manipulated the law accusing Soraya of infidelity. Consequently, Soraya was condemned to death by stoning. She was buried up to her waist and stoned to death while her children watch and her fellow villagers cheer her brutal death knowing all of the time that Soraya is innocent. More appalling  is the fact that Ali, her sons and her father participate in the stoning and her murder.

After Joan’s death, she was denied a proper burial. Her ashes and entrails were collected and thrown into a river. After Soraya’s death, she too was denied a burial. her body was left exposed by a river to be consumed by animals. After Neda’s death, her family was evicted from their home, her body was kept by the government, buried without a funeral and all mourning at the Mosques were banned.

So powerful is the film that by watching Soraya’s death, the viewer bears winess to an validates not only Soraya’s personal tragedy, but also that of every toher woman – like Neda Soltan -not only in Iran, but all other women living under the tyranny and oppression of theocratic, Islamic rule and sharia law throughout the world.

Ultimately, The Stoning of Soraya M., for all of its emtionally wrenching moments, for all of its horror, and ro all of its seeming despair, is a story of beauty and triumph.  It is a testament to truth and bravery. Joan of Arc was retried after her death and in 1456 she was declared innocent. Joan was canonized in 1920, becoming the only saint in history who had previously been declared a heretic. Karma is a bitch. Truth always prevails. She was declared patroness of France in 1922. The pride of her nation.

Soraya’s story declares her innocence. Now it is up to brave Iranian’s like Neda Soltan to hold up Soraya as demaocracy, and the end of theocratic rule and subjugation under the present law. It is up to the moderate Iranians to assure that these women’s stories are heard around the world, for solidarity and FREEDOM!

America’s Leaders

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Where are our congressmen, our govenors, our President? The politicians do such a great job of taking off their sport coats, rolling up their white collar sleeves and loosening their ties while campaigning. Smiling, preaching, rubbing elbows with people in the community. These things give the American public hope; hope that we will vote genuine leaders into office that will change bad policies.

Our United States is becoming an impoverished, third world country. We seem to elect these egomaniacal Presidents that weakly delegate while visualizing how they will make a mark in history. What about the unemployed and starving Americans on the street?

Roll your sleeves up Mr. Governor, Mr. Congressman, Mr. President! Feel our pain. Gas prices are climbing, people and the Banks are hoarding money. You are our leaders!

The solution is simple. Reach out to your neighbor, carry a bag of apples in your car to hand to the homeless, and go shopping at least once a week before the dollar diminishes to dust!

Nadya Suleman giving birth to octuplets raises a number of questions concerning the point at which ethical parameters begin to caution restraint.  Simply because the technology exists to do something, should that be done?

Science has achieved stunning advances in technology.  Unfortunately, as technology has rapidly expanded, the moral and ethical values that would inhibit unchecked use of technologies has seemed to contract.  Our core human values, our decency and sensitivity, out ability to recognize the need of boundaries and limits are taken over by the arrogant assumption that we are Gods by right of our ability to perform awesome feats of technology.

Nowhere is this more self evident that in the case of Nadya Suleman’s octuplets.  The creation of life has been hijacked by fertility doctors whose arrogance goes beyond audacity, with the assumption that they can act in defiance of natural order.  This is a terrifying delusion of grandeur.  The “Gods of Science” do not possess consciences that recognize moral and ethical restraint in committing acts of loftiness.  We are not Gods, only irresponsible humans playing with power we have no business meddling with.

Towards the end of World War II we discovered how to weaponize our ability to split the atom.  We created the very weapons of mass destruction in which we are now so frightened that Iran, or some other Islamic State, will use against us.  Sixty-five years later, we are no more able to responsibly use the technology we create.  We discover it is possible to do something and we absolutely must do that something, regardless of the consequences.  We may delude ourselves by thinking we act with the power of God, but we are, in our manners and morals, only spoiled, petulant, selfish children.

Despite the public outcry and outrage at Nadya Suleman’s irresponsibility, and at her doctor’s complete lack of ethical restraint, this debacle will soon be forgotten.  We are so desensitized and accustomed to such shocks.  Once the initial amazement wears off, it almost seems normal.  Or it will certainly seem so, once the next outrage, which will inevitably occur, eclipses this one. Doesn’t it worry you? Anyone?

Of Obama and Black Genocide

Friday, May 1st, 2009

During the Saddleback Forum, while campaigning for the Presidency, in response to the query, “At what point does a baby get human rights?”, Barack Obama responded, “Answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade.”

If I were confronted with a delicate question that I felt I were unable to answer because it exceeded my competence, I would remain neutral in regard to that question and not attempt to tinker with it, or the machinery surrounding it.  Not so Barack Obama.

From my perspective, President Obama’s response to the question was disingenuous and deceptive.  Had Obama answered the question truthfully, it seems to me that his response would have been, “I don’t care.”  Obama’s record in the senate votes show him favoring abortion 100%.

What I find truly astonishing about President Obama’s election, is the fact that approximately 98% of black voters voted for him.  In spite of the fact that his support of abortion supports a practice that disproportionately affects Blacks.  Over 1,200 Black abortions occur daily in the United States.

More to the point, black women constitute approximately 13 percent of the female population, ages 15 to 44 in the United States.  This group undergoes approximately 36 percent of all abortions performed in the U.S. each year.    * (statistics referred to available at the www.blackgenocide.org website)

Abortion has killed far more Blacks than the Ku Klux Klan ever lynched.  And this is a practice that President Obama supports absolutely!  While Obama evaded responding to the question of when a baby gains human rights, he had no problem at all promising his unwavering support for Planned Parenthood, giving them his promise to keep abortion legal and to sign the Freedom of Choice Act.  Should this act become law, it would remove existing restrictions on abortion (e.g. on partial birth abortions).  It would also seriously compromise and/or remove conscience clause provisions protecting medical personnel from participating in practices they find morally or ethically objectionable, and, in effect, impose upon every American Citizen President Obama’s opinion that abortion is a fundamental right that women are entitled to.

President Obama would do this, despite the findings of a recent poll conducted by Harris Interactive, and sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which found the following results to reflect the opinions of the citizens he represents:

  • That 72% of those surveyed strongly support/somewhat support that abortion providers inform women of potential risks to their health posed by abortion, and about alternatives to abortion.
  • That 59% of those surveyed support laws requiring giving parents the chance to be involved in their minor daughters decision to seek an abortion.
  • That 58% of those surveyed support laws that protect doctors and nurses from being forced to perform, or refer patients for, abortions against their will.
  • That 53% of those surveyed were against partial birth abortion.
  • That 47% of those surveyed were in favor of laws that prevent the use of tax payer funds for paying for abortions.

While Mark Twain once defined the three greatest lies as being the lie, the damn lie, and the statistics, there remains value nonetheless, in surveys as a barometer for measuring public opinion.  Where abortion is concerned, a majority of the public clearly does not support unrestricted access to abortion, which will be the result of the Freedom of Choice Act.

U.S.A Today on Thursday, January 22, 2009 printed a letter from Debbie Adkins of Roanoke Virginia, in which Ms. Adkins wrote, “I did not vote for a black President.  I voted for the man who I am sure can get us back to where we as Americans belong.”  While Ms. Adkins claims she did not vote for a black President, it is very obvious that 98% of black voters did.

In his inaugural speech, President Obama said that people will “Judge on what you can build, not what you can destroy.”  In the context of his speech, this observation was reference to terrorists, and terrorism.  However, I would assert it applies equally to President Obama’s position on abortion, which does not reflect the feelings of the majority of Americans he now represents, nor does it amount to a victory for the Blacks who voted for a black President, who, by his own actions, is a greater threat to his own people than White’s ever were, or ever will be.

Bridge Loans and Bail Outs

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

U.S.A. Today, on December 23,2008 ran an Op-Ed that began by noting that by March 2009 it should be clear whether the $17.4 billion “bridge loan” granted to the beleaguered, Big Three, Detroit automakers will show progress commensurate with the investment to warrant additional help from Washington.

While there are numerous, compelling reasons to support, at least superficially, the auto industry, it seems to me that it sets a bad precedent; or should I say, continues it. The atrocious examples of mismanagement set by Bear Sterns, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (ad nauseum) have previously “set the bar”, as it were.

Bailing out industry with consumers to tax dollars is an insult on top of injury to the consumers, who have paid bloated prices for goods and services from corporations and companies that do not care to give equal value back to the consumers. Think sports utility vehicles. Now the consumer is forced to prop up and support the very companies that created the fuel guzzling behemoths that became an albatross around owners necks over the summer when gas sky rocketed to $4.10 per gallon.

Whether General Motors, Chrysler and Ford will introduce truly innovative, hybrid automobiles that will reward the consumers investment with quality, and the first genuine steps toward breaking the dependent stranglehold upon fossil fuels which have been forced on auto owners for far too long by Detroit’s abject refusal to innovate before economic meltdown forces it to do so, remains to be seen. In truth, it seems to me that Detroit’s sudden urge to innovate efficiency is a disingenuous, insincere, self-serving apology to the consumer, being offered now, only so the automakers can save themselves.  It required congress to castigate the big three’s  CEO’s into assemblance of contrition, after flying to Washington on board private company jets to plead broke, and beg a handout! The arrogance displayed exceeded hubris!

To reward such behavior with the means to keep G.M., Chrysler and Ford afloat, seems not only ill advised, but worse, is in complete opposition to the fundamental principles that support capitalism and the free market economy. Specifically, that such industry is Darwinian allowing only the strongest companies, corporations and producers to survive based on quality of products, goods, and services that are offered to the consumers.

General Motors, Chrysler and Ford have all failed to provide quality automobiles to American Consumers; thus, by right of Darwinian business principles, the big three deserve to fail, and should be allowed to do so. While such failure would have enormous negative impact on the already wounded American economy. At least in the short term, the far reaching consequences would be the emergence of a revitalized auto industry that will have learned from its predecessors mistakes. A new auto industry would purchase and use the existing infrastructure, would employ the same auto workers, would contract with the same parts manufacturers. The interruption and fall out would be short term and result in a vastly improved operational standard as well as quality production tailored to the consumer’s needs and demands. Nothing would be lost, and a great deal would be gained.

However, bail outs and bridge loans which support and keep afloat unworthy businesses at the expense of the taxpayers, and which effectively result in the nationalization of each business our government bails out, will not stimulate free market economic growth. It will stagnate it, because ti is a socialist model of business. Socialism does not encourage innovation, because it does not reward success and punish failure. It creates a status quo and struggles to maintain it by staving off inevitable entropy and systemic decay. We saw rewards and fruits of socialism and nationalization when we witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union. Socialism and nationalization are not viable models for economic stimulus.

For our economy to rebound and recover it is imperative that corporations, companies and businesses doomed to fail be allowed to do so, thus allowing the healthy, viable businesses to emerge from the destruction, to thrive , and to renew the free market while strengthening the principles of capitalism and democracy upon which our nation was founded.

I Hate Those Two Words: Democrat and Republican

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Why does everything have to come down to Democrat and Republican…why the bipartisan bullshit! The party line is in the way of the solution.  Why do we have just two dominant parties? Where are the real people? The true statesmen? What happened to those “dollar a year man”?  (The guys that had money like Teddy Roosevelt that worked for a dollar year, for public service, for the good of the country & people. They all talk the talk, but nobody does anything about it. They all want to stick to the PARTY LINES, whether it is good or bad, it doesn’t matter.  It is time we had a third or fourth party or abolish this entire system.

Sometimes a little dictatorship is a good thing….like Joseph Stalin had the purges…he shot everybody! So if we shot all of the congressman and senators that screwed everything up for the past 2 decades, the people who would be elected to replace them would not think twice before they made such bumbling errors and careless mistakes with the American people.

Octuplets

Friday, February 6th, 2009

I have to comment on the woman who just had 8 babies. She had 6 hungry mouths to feed at home and no husband. What was she thinking? How educated is her physician to implant these embryos knowing her situation. I have a solution….The doctor implanted the embryos, he should marry this woman and give her a stable home and raise those children. What do you all think?

Comments welcome.

Bailout Smailout!

Friday, February 6th, 2009

When did American citizens stop taking responsibility for their actions? Do you think the economists and bankers didn’t see this crisis coming? What about the wishful home buyer that could barely make ends meet and signs a loan for $300,000? All these people are guilty of greed. Let these businesses collapse and the dollar plunge. Any plan to fix this will be like a bandaid. What goes up must come down! The taxpayer doesn’t need to bail out others, let them feel the pain of their mistakes.   I am an advocate of free enterprise and hard work and that business owners shouldn’t have to coddle the lazy or greedy.  The corporations and fat cats that could show some kind of philanthropic effort seem to hoard money and increase advertisement.
